Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

On 02 March 1904, Theodor Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. His pen name, Dr. Seuss, came from his mother’s maiden name which also happened to be his middle name as well. He penned 48 books (not all children’s books either) and has sold well over 200 million copies that have been translated into multiple languages around the world.

Theodor was a graduate of Dartmouth College and was studying at Oxford University where he met his first wife, Helen, who encouraged him to become a professional illustrator. Seeing as how he had worked for many magazines back in the US as a cartoonist, he did not need much convincing.

His first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, was rejected by over 24 publishers before finally being
printed in 1937. “The Cat in the Hat” came about in 1957 and was his bestselling children’s book of all time. This particular book came about when his publisher asked him to make a book using 220 new-reader vocabulary words that could serve as an alternative to the schools boring beginners reading books that children did not care for.

No matter your age, or your country, Dr. Seuss has likely touched your life at some point with his fun rhymes and cool illustrations.

While Dr. Seuss passed from this life in 1991, his heart and soul live on in his books.
